And, in truth, at Gandawaghe,

Tekakwitha’s flight was bruited

All about the babbling village.

One and twenty years she’d lived there,

Hardly noticed but to scoff her—

Now she’d gone, the tongues were wagging:

Whither fled is Tekakwitha?

Surely to the Mission northward,

With the twain who left at dawnlight!

Swift canoe to Skahnetati

Down the Mohawk sped with tidings,

Tidings for her absent uncle,

Onsigongo, mighty chieftain.

Such a turmoil in the village,

Through the people such confusion,

Save that on his knees in Chapel,

Prayed the Blackrobe, begged in silence,

Jacques de Lamberville, the Pastor,

Once again for Tekakwitha:

Jesu Child, who with Thy Mother,

Led by Joseph into Egypt,

Madest flight from bloody Herod,

And didst find in land of darkness,

Safety from Thy dread pursuers:

Point for Kateri in safety,

Path to land with grace enlightened;

Speed her feet in flight to northward;

Make as lead his legs pursuing,

Who would stay her from Thy service.

Be it so!...Amen...I pray Thee!

Jesu Child, protect the maiden!
